Alain-Fournier: Le Grand Meaulnes (Critical Guides to French Texts)
Published in Paperback by Grant & Cutler (December, 1986)
Author: Robert Gibson
Average review score:

The Best Novel of the Twentieth Century
The easy way with which the great French novelist leads the reader into a realistic mysterical world , can only be described as brilliant. The world of Meaulnes is magical, but not in the modern, cheapish, "Celestine" way. This is the quality of Alain-Fournier. Nature plays an important role in the story. The adventures of Meaulnes can not be seen apart from the beautiful woods that always surround him at his journeys. The story is told by a friend of the main character, Meaulnes.

Meaulnes tries desperately to find the girl he once saw at a medievalesque party in the middle of the forest, upon which he stumbled by coincidence. Alain Fournier manages to surround the two boys with a world that is as riddling and magical as it seems real and authentic. The quest of Meaulnes bears strong resemblances to Proust's "recherche", and is in fact a 20th century, personalized, search for the holy grail. That is not an easy theme for a first novel. As Alain-Fournier succeeded so wonderfully, one can only speculate what the world has missed - Alain-Fournier died at age 28, defending his fatherland France.

A metaphor for adulthood and the loss of innocence
In Alain-Fournier's richly written but thinly veiled book of lost innocence we can find a connection to our own lives and mourn the loss of love and innocence that we have experienced along with the characters, all the while losing ourselves in the striking language of the book.

American Grand Prix Racing; A Century of Drivers and Cars
Published in Hardcover by Motorbooks International (September, 1997)
Author: Tim Considine
Average review score:

Historical
Especially for European fans like myself, who don't know the history of American grand prix drivers and cars, this is an execelent book. I've just loved it. Five stars, at least.

If you're a fan of Grand Prix racing, you must have this!
Over the course of modern Formula One racing since 1950, there have been two publicly successful and one publicly unsuccessful U.S. Grand Prix racer, but did you know that there are more than 140 American men and one woman who have challenged in Grand Prix since 1906? Tim Considine spent seven years of his life in research for this volume, which includes biographies of many of the racers, period photos by some of the top photographers, including Pete Biro, Bernard Cahier and Dave Friedman, and a time line history of U.S. drivers, teams and tracks in Grand Prix. As a reference alone, this book is worth having in anyone's GP collection, but as a read, it's a "can't put it down" book. You're going to love this.

Beneath the Rim: A Photographic Journey Through the Grand Canyon
Published in Hardcover by Louisiana State University Press (July, 1996)
Author: C. C. Lockwood
Average review score:

Spectacular presentation of the inner Canyon
C.C. Lockwood has done a remarkable presentation of the Grand Canyon and the Colorado River. It is obvious from the pictures and text presented that he is extremely knowledgable of one of the seven natural wonders of the world. There are views of the inner Canyon that have never before been published and his intimate portrayal of river running on some of the largest white water in North America exemplifies his professionalism as a photographer. For Canyon lovers and river runners alike, both past and future, I highly recommend Mr. Lockwood's achievement.

A MUST for all Grand Canyon enthusiasts!
A beautiful glimpse into the heart of the Grand Canyon and the Colorado River. The photographs in this book have captured some of the magic that can only be found in the depths of the canyon. I have done two dory trips through the Grand Canyon and I can say that this book is the next best thing to actually being there.

Billy Brown made something grand!
I read and re-read this book when I was younger and now I am reading it to my daughter. Despite a few missing pages, she is totally engrossed in the story and can't wait to see what Billy will add next to his project. It is perfect for the imaginative minds of young children.

Chardin
Published in Hardcover by Yale Univ Pr (May, 2000)
Authors: Jean Baptiste Simeon Chardin, Pierre Rosenberg, and Galeries Nationales Du Grand Palais (France)
Average review score:

A very satisfying book
I have to disagree with the above editorial. I compared the reproductions with others that I have, and although there are sometimes subtle differences they are not always to the disadvantage of this book. Some pictures are better than others, but the advantage here is that each reproduction is on a page by itself with commentary on an adjoining page-a catalogue layout that I always prefer in that it give the painting room to breathe and because I'm not reading on one page and finding the relevant painting six pages later. The book is obviously done by true lovers of the painter. Chardin is profound and a painter's painter. You can see and feel why he was adored by Cezanne, Soutine, Manet, Proust, and I'm sure many other significant artists. He has rightly been called a virtuoso of stillness. Even in reproduction, pieces of fruit, kitchenware and game animals are alive and quietly glowing from within with a warmth, compassion and a kind of subtle majesty-it's really deep in an indescribable way. In my opinion a very worthwhile purchase.

Beautiful!
This book is simply gorgeous. I had been well acquainted with Chardin a number of years ago, and picked up this book on a whim at the store. Rediscovering this master was a true delight. His paintings are deceptively simple: behind the cool colors and the measured scenes lies a captivating energy. This particular volume is very well done. The reproductions are of superior quality and the accompanying essays by the world's most renowned Chardin expert are enjoyable and enlightening. Art books are expensive, but this is one that is well worth the investment.

Colorado Fourteeners Grand Slam
Published in Paperback by Falcon Publishing Company (July, 1991)
Author: Roger Edrinn
Average review score:

Beautiful book, great information
This book contains the best photos of all the Fourteeners we have seen. It's very readable. Its ratings are extremely helpful. It does not provide detailed hiking directions. Rather, it helps you choose among the Fourteeners for priorities to climb.

Spectacular Mountain Photography!
Roger Edrinn takes the most spectacular photographs I've seen of Colorado's 14,000 foot peaks. I highly recommend getting this picture book if you can find a copy. He photographs the peaks with a climber's eye, and often captures unique perspectives of the peaks. I especially like his photo of mountain goats crossing the narrow catwalk on Mount Eolus -- an event that I was fortunate enough to experience firsthand on my own hike of the peak.

Corvette Grand Sport 1962-67
Published in Hardcover by Motorbooks International (November, 1999)
Authors: Dave Friedman and Lowell C. Paddock
Average review score:

Just buy it!
If this book even slightly interests you, don't think about it just buy it. The huge amount of historical photos and data is immense and immersive. You have to see it to believe it, just buy it!

Couldn't ask for a better reference...
of the Grand Sport Corvette. This book has some fascinating ancedotes about the development and racing of these rare machines. It also has some of the most detailed photographs of this era of racing I've ever seen. If you need a reference for the Grand Sport, this book is well worth the money (and the wait - it took almost six weeks to arrive). It covers all five of the Grand Sports build by Chevrolet and follows them through their lifetime, even including some beautiful color pictures of the restored cars in modern times. I absolutely recommend this book for any fan of Corvettes, the Grand Sport, or just the racing of that period in history.

Cowboys & Cave Dwellers: Basketmaker Archaeology in Utah's Grand Gulch
Published in Hardcover by School of American Research Press (July, 1997)
Authors: Fred M. Blackburn and Ray A. Williamson
Average review score:

Vindication for Wetherills
I appreciated this book, not just for the fantastic illustrations and stories, but for improving the reputation of the Wetherills, long considered no-good cowboy pot hunters. A great companion to this books is In Search of the Old Ones by David Roberts, in which Fred Blackburn features largely as a revolutionary who shapes Roberts' thinking about the mess each generation of southwestern archeologists passes on to the next.

Detective story on finding "lost" archaeological collection
Undoubtedly the popular book of the year in Southwest archaeology, "Cowboys and Cave Dwellers" tells how a group of talented and dedicated "amateurs" found the missing links between nearly forgotten collections of artifacts stored in museum basements and their original sites in Utah's spectacular Grand Gulch. In the process they unearthed valuable information about the people called Basketmakers, the first farmers of the Colorado Plateau. The first explorers and untrained archaeologists who dug sites in Grand Gulch removed thousands of artifacts, often taking little care to record their locations. By carefully matching old photographs, diaries, newspaper articles and the signatures those adventurers carved on the canyon walls, the authors of this book, the members of the Wetherill-Grand Gulch Research Project, were able to locate many of the caves and cliff dwelling where the treasures were originally found. They solved one of the most puzzling mysteries of Southeastern Utah archaeology: the location of long lost Cave 7, where Mesa Verde discoverer Richard Whetherill dug up dozens of skeletons that seemed to show evidence of a massacre. A good story with extensive historial and archaeological background and beautifully illustrated, this book is essential for anyone interested in Southwest archaeology. A good companion piece is William Ferguson's "The Anasazi of Mesa Verde and the Four Corners Region," which gives a broader view of the entire Mesa Verde-San Juan region.
